Model answer (5 marks)

Mendeleev arranged the elements in order of increasing atomic mass, placing them in rows (periods) and columns (groups) so that elements with similar chemical properties appeared in the same column.

He deliberately left blank spaces in the table where no element was known, anticipating that future discoveries would fill those gaps.

Two ways his arrangement differed from the modern table:
1. The modern periodic table is ordered by increasing atomic number (number of protons) rather than atomic mass.
2. Mendeleev’s ordering sometimes placed elements out of sequence because the atomic masses of some elements (especially those with multiple isotopes) did not match the expected trend, whereas the modern table uses atomic number to avoid this problem.

Examiner tips

  • Use the phrase "in order of increasing atomic mass" for the description. Mention the blank spaces as gaps for future elements. State the two differences: atomic number vs atomic mass, and the mass‑based misordering due to isotopes. Keep the answer concise and use correct UK spelling.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing atomic number with atomic mass in the description. Forgetting to mention the blank spaces. Saying the modern table is arranged by atomic mass instead of atomic number. Over‑explaining the isotope issue beyond what is required.

  1. Mendeleev arranged elements in order of increasing atomic mass / 'atomic weights'
  2. Elements with similar chemical properties were placed in the same group / column
  3. Mendeleev left gaps in his table where no known element fitted / where elements had not yet been discovered
