Model answer (4 marks)

A geostationary satellite orbits above the equator.
Its orbital period is 24 h, the same as the Earth's rotation period.
Because of this, the satellite remains above the same point on Earth's surface at all times.
A dish on the ground can therefore stay fixed on the satellite, giving a continuous signal.

  • Use the term "geostationary" and mention the equatorial orbit and 24‑hour period.
  • Explain that the satellite’s fixed position means the dish need not track, ensuring continuous reception.
  • Include the link between fixed position and continuous signal.
