Model answer (5 marks)

Water is a universal solvent, allowing many substances to dissolve and be transported within the organism.
Water dissolves essential ions and molecules, enabling their movement in blood, sap and other fluids.
It acts as a reactant in hydrolysis reactions, such as the breakdown of food during digestion.
Water is also a reactant in photosynthesis, where it is split to provide electrons and protons.
Its high specific heat capacity means large amounts of energy are required to change its temperature, stabilising body temperature and aiding thermal regulation.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact phrase ‘universal solvent’ and mention transport of ions. Show that water is a reactant in both digestion and photosynthesis. Include the specific heat capacity point to reach 5 marks.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing water as a product rather than a reactant in reactions. Omitting the specific heat capacity or describing it vaguely. Using non‑examiner terminology such as ‘good solvent’ without linking to transport.
