Commercial plant growers use micropropagation to produce thousands of identical copies of high-value ornamental plants. Small pieces of tissue called explants are taken from a parent plant and cultured on nutrient agar containing specific plant growth regulators.

Model answer (4 marks)

Totipotency means that each plant cell contains the complete genome of the parent plant, so it can give rise to any cell type.

Because of this, a small piece of tissue (explants) taken from a parent plant can be induced to dedifferentiate by adding auxins and cytokinins to the culture medium.

The dedifferentiated cells form a callus, which is a mass of undifferentiated, totipotent cells.

This callus can be divided and then redifferentiated into whole plants; all the new plants contain the same genetic material as the parent, so they are clones produced in large numbers.
