Explain why thermal energy transfer by convection cannot occur in a solid.

Convection is one of three mechanisms by which thermal energy can be transferred. It is commonly observed in fluids such as liquids and gases but not in solids.

Convection requires the bulk movement of matter to transfer heat.
In a solid the particles are fixed in a lattice by strong forces and cannot move freely.
Because the particles cannot flow, a hotter region cannot carry energy to a cooler region by bulk motion.
Convection currents rely on density differences that make fluid rise and fall; solids do not exhibit such density‑driven flows.

- State that convection needs bulk flow of matter. Explain that solids have fixed particles. Mention density‑driven currents are absent in solids.
- Use the exact wording from the mark scheme: "bulk movement", "fixed positions", "cannot move freely", "density differences".
Common mistakes
- Confusing conduction with convection. Claiming solids can have convection currents. Using vague terms like "heat transfer" without linking to particle movement.

- Convection requires the bulk movement (flow) of matter/particles to transfer thermal energy.
- In a solid, particles are held in fixed positions by strong intermolecular/interatomic forces and cannot move freely from place to place.
- Because particles cannot move freely, hotter (more energetic) regions cannot carry energy to cooler regions by bulk flow.
- Convection currents depend on density differences causing fluid to rise and fall; solids do not exhibit these density-driven flows.
