There are millions of different species on Earth. Scientists use a system of classification to organise living organisms into groups based on shared characteristics. Each species is given a unique two-part scientific name.
Model answer (5 marks)
Scientists classify living organisms to group them according to shared characteristics, making it easier to identify, study and communicate about them.
The binomial naming system gives each species a two‑part Latin name. The first part is the genus, the second part is the specific epithet (species). The same binomial name is used worldwide, so scientists in all countries can recognise the organism without confusion caused by varying common names.

Examiner tips
- Use the word ‘group’ and mention ‘shared characteristics’ for the first point. Show that classification helps communication and study. State that the binomial name is Latin, two parts, genus first, species second. Highlight that the name is universal, avoiding confusion from common names.
Common mistakes
- Writing the binomial name in all capitals or not using italics. Forgetting to mention that the name is Latin. Confusing the genus with the species or vice versa.
