Model answer (4 marks)

Electromagnetic waves have a wide range of wavelengths and frequencies, so their interaction with matter differs.
1. Radio waves have very long wavelengths; they can travel long distances through the atmosphere with little loss, making them ideal for broadcasting and satellite communication.
2. Microwaves have shorter wavelengths; they are absorbed by water molecules, which allows them to heat food efficiently and to be used in microwave ovens.
3. Infra‑red waves are absorbed by many materials and can transfer heat, so they are used for heating and cooking.
4. Visible light can be guided through glass fibres with low loss, making it useful for fibre‑optic communication.
These differences mean each wave type is chosen for the application that best matches its properties.

  1. Electromagnetic waves have different wavelengths (and frequencies) across the spectrum
  2. Different materials absorb, transmit or reflect different wavelengths differently, making each type suited to specific applications
  3. Credit one correct specific use linked to a named wave type — e.g. microwaves are used for satellite communication because they can penetrate the atmosphere / radio waves are used for broadcasting because their long wavelength allows them to travel large distances without significant loss of quality
  4. Credit a second correct specific use linked to a different named wave type — e.g. infrared is used for cooking / heating because it transfers thermal energy / visible light is used in fibre optics because it is best reflected within glass / X-rays are used in medical imaging because they pass through soft tissue but are absorbed by bone
