Plant cell walls are made from cellulose, a carbohydrate that provides structural support. Cellulose is formed from glucose monomers joined together in long chains.
Model answer (5 marks)
Cellulose is a polymer made of many glucose monomers linked by β‑1,4‑glycosidic bonds, forming long chains.
1. The chains are tightly packed into bundles called microfibrils, giving the wall great tensile strength.
2. Because the β‑1,4 bonds are resistant to hydrolysis, cellulose is insoluble and does not dissolve in the cell’s aqueous environment.
3. The insolubility prevents it from affecting the cell’s osmotic balance, so the cell can maintain its shape.
4. The rigid microfibril bundles provide structural support, keeping the cell from bursting under turgor pressure.
5. Cellulose’s chemical stability means it is not readily broken down, so it offers long‑lasting structural integrity rather than being used as a respiratory substrate.
