An oak tree supports hundreds of different species, including insects, birds, fungi, and bacteria. Some scientists refer to a large oak tree as a 'mini-ecosystem'.

Model answer (4 marks)

An ecosystem must contain both biotic and abiotic components.
The oak tree is only one organism, so it represents only one part of a population.
A community is made up of all populations of different species in an area – the tree alone does not form a community.
An ecosystem requires a community of organisms interacting with the surrounding abiotic environment (soil, water, light, etc.), which the single tree does not provide.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact phrases from the mark scheme – ‘biotic and abiotic components’, ‘single organism’, ‘community’, ‘interacting with the abiotic environment’.
  • Show each point clearly, e.g. with numbered sentences or short bullet‑style statements.
  • Keep the answer concise – 4 marks only, so one sentence per point is sufficient.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the tree with a forest or ecosystem; writing that a tree is an ecosystem because it supports many species. Failing to mention the abiotic components or the need for a community of populations. Using vague language like ‘many organisms’ without specifying populations or communities.

  1. An ecosystem must include both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components
  2. The oak tree is only one organism / a single individual, so it represents only one part of a population
  3. A community consists of all the populations of different species living in an area / the oak tree alone does not make a community
