Bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder.
Bile emulsifies dietary fats, breaking them into small droplets.
This increases the surface area available for pancreatic lipase.
Bile also neutralises stomach acid, creating an alkaline environment for lipase to act efficiently.

Examiner tips
- Use the exact terminology (bile, emulsifies, surface area, neutralises, alkaline).
- Show the causal link: emulsification → increased surface area → enzyme action.
- Mention both production site and storage organ.
- Explain the pH change and its effect on lipase activity.
Common mistakes
- Confusing bile with pancreatic juice or omitting the gall bladder.
- Failing to state that bile increases surface area for lipase.
- Not mentioning the neutralisation of stomach acid or the alkaline requirement for lipase.
