Scientists have used different systems over time to classify all living organisms. Carl Woese proposed the three-domain system after analysing the genetic material of a wide range of organisms, including bacteria found in extreme environments.

Model answer (4 marks)

The three‑domain system groups all organisms into three domains: Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya. In contrast, the five‑kingdom system divides them into five kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.

In the three‑domain system Archaea are recognised as a separate domain of primitive, often extremophilic, bacteria, whereas the five‑kingdom system placed all bacteria together in the kingdom Monera.

The domain Eukarya contains all eukaryotes, which in the five‑kingdom system were spread over several kingdoms (Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia).

Finally, the three‑domain system is based on genetic and molecular evidence (DNA sequence analysis), giving a more accurate picture of evolutionary relationships than the five‑kingdom system, which relied mainly on observable characteristics.

  • Use the exact terms ‘domains’ and ‘kingdoms’; mention Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya and the five kingdoms; explain the separation of Archaea from Bacteria; note the genetic basis of the new system.
  • Keep each point brief but complete – 1 mark each – and avoid unnecessary words.

  • Confusing the five kingdoms with the older two‑kingdom system; writing ‘Monera’ instead of ‘Bacteria’ or ‘Archaea’.

  1. The three-domain system groups organisms into three domains (Archaea, Bacteria and Eukarya), whereas the five kingdom system groups organisms into five kingdoms.
  2. The three-domain system separates Archaea (primitive bacteria living in extreme environments) from true Bacteria as distinct domains, whereas the five kingdom system placed all bacteria together in Prokaryotae.
  3. The Eukarya domain in the three-domain system includes all eukaryotic organisms, which were previously spread across multiple kingdoms (Animalia, Fungi, Plantae, Protoctista) in the five kingdom system.
  4. The three-domain system is based on genetic / molecular evidence (DNA analysis), making it more accurate / reflecting evolutionary relationships more closely than the five kingdom system, which was based primarily on observable characteristics.
