The trachea is reinforced by C‑shaped cartilage rings that prevent collapse when the internal pressure falls during inhalation. The open part of each ring faces the oesophagus, allowing it to expand when food is swallowed.
The trachea and bronchi are lined with ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium and goblet cells that secrete mucus. The mucus traps inhaled particles and pathogens, and the coordinated beating of the cilia moves the mucus‑laden material upward toward the pharynx, keeping the lower airways clear.
Bronchioles lack cartilage but contain smooth muscle in their walls. This muscle can contract or relax, allowing bronchioles to dilate or constrict and thereby regulate airflow to different lung regions, ensuring efficient delivery of air to the alveoli.
