A DNA nucleotide consists of a phosphate group, a deoxyribose sugar and one of four nitrogenous bases – adenine, thymine, cytosine or guanine.
The linear sequence of these bases along a DNA strand encodes genetic information; the order of bases determines the sequence of amino acids in proteins.
During replication, complementary base pairing occurs: A pairs with T via two hydrogen bonds and C pairs with G via three hydrogen bonds.
Because each strand serves as a template, the complementary base pairing ensures that the new strand receives the exact complementary sequence, allowing accurate copying of the genetic information.
