The binomial system gives each species a unique two‑part Latin name consisting of the genus and species epithet.
Using Latin (or Latinised) names means the name is universally understood by scientists regardless of their native language, avoiding confusion caused by different common/local names.
The hierarchical classification system groups organisms into nested taxa (e.g. domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species), with each level containing organisms that share more characteristics than the level above.
The genus name in the binomial links each species directly into the hierarchical system, so the classification of an organism can be inferred from its name, reflecting evolutionary or structural relationships with other members of the same genus.
