Explain how sugars produced in the leaves of a plant are transported to non-photosynthetic tissues such as the roots.

Model answer (4 marks)
Sugars are carried in the phloem by a process called translocation. The phloem transports sucrose (and sometimes amino acids) from photosynthetic tissues, the source, to non‑photosynthetic tissues, the sink, such as the roots. Translocation requires energy, which is supplied by the pressure‑flow mechanism that moves the sugars down a concentration gradient.
