Water is split (photolysed) in the thylakoid lumen at Photosystem II by light energy absorbed by chlorophyll.
The reaction 2H₂O → 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ + O₂ releases electrons and protons that replace those lost from oxidised P680.
The electrons travel through the electron‑transport chain, while the protons contribute to the proton gradient.
The oxygen produced is released as a waste product of the photolysis step.

- Explain that O₂ is a waste product, not used in the chain.
