Explain how mutualistic relationships between two species can affect the survival and abundance of each partner within a community.

Mutualism is a type of interspecific interaction in which both participating species benefit. Examples include mycorrhizal associations between fungi and plant roots, and the relationship between nitrogen-fixing bacteria and legume root nodules.
Model answer (4 marks)
Mutualism increases the fitness of both partners, so each species is more likely to survive and reproduce.
1. One partner gains a resource or service it cannot obtain efficiently alone – e.g. a plant receives mineral ions, fixed nitrogen or water from a fungal or bacterial partner.
2. The other partner receives organic compounds, carbohydrates or photosynthate from the plant, providing an energy source that supports its growth and reproduction.
3. Because both species can survive and reproduce more successfully, their population sizes or abundances rise compared with the situation where the association is absent.
4. This effect is especially pronounced in nutrient‑poor or otherwise limiting environments, where the mutualistic exchange can be the key to persistence.

Examiner tips
- Use the word ‘fitness’ to link benefit to survival/reproduction. Mention the specific resource exchanged. Show that both partners benefit. Explain the population/abundance outcome.
Common mistakes
- Confusing mutualism with commensalism or parasitism. Failing to specify the resource or service exchanged. Not linking the benefit to increased population size or survival.
