Cladistics groups organisms on the basis of shared derived traits (synapomorphies) that indicate common evolutionary ancestry, whereas traditional Linnaean classification groups them mainly on overall morphological similarity and physical features.
Cladistics therefore produces monophyletic groups (clades) that contain an ancestor and all its descendants, while Linnaean groups can be paraphyletic or polyphyletic.
An advantage of cladistics is that it more accurately reflects true evolutionary history, and it can incorporate molecular or genetic data (e.g. DNA sequence comparisons) to refine groupings, allowing re‑classification when morphology is misleading such as in cases of convergent evolution.
