The fundamental niche is the full range of abiotic and biotic conditions under which a species could theoretically survive and reproduce.

Temperature is an abiotic factor that limits a species’ niche. Each species has a thermal tolerance range – a lower and an upper limit – within which its enzymes work efficiently, allowing normal metabolism, growth and reproduction.

Temperatures below the lower lethal limit or above the upper lethal limit cause enzyme denaturation or metabolic failure, so the species cannot survive or reproduce outside this range. These limits therefore set the temperature boundaries of the fundamental niche.

The niche can be visualised as a multidimensional hypervolume; temperature is one axis, and other abiotic factors such as pH, salinity and light intensity add further axes that together define the full fundamental niche.

Examiner tips

  • Use the definition of fundamental niche first. Show how temperature limits enzyme function. State lower/upper lethal limits as boundaries. Mention the hypervolume concept to link to multidimensionality.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the fundamental niche with the realised niche. Forgetting to mention both lower and upper temperature limits. Using vague terms like "hot" or "cold" instead of specific thermal limits.

  1. The fundamental niche is the full range of abiotic and biotic conditions under which a species could theoretically survive and reproduce.
  2. Each species has a range of temperatures (thermal tolerance range) within which enzymes function effectively, allowing metabolism, growth, and reproduction to occur.
  3. The upper and lower lethal/tolerance limits of temperature define the boundaries of the niche along the temperature axis, so temperatures outside this range exclude the species from those areas.
  4. The niche can be visualised as a multidimensional hypervolume, with temperature as one axis; other abiotic factors (e.g. pH, salinity, light intensity) each add further axes that together define the full fundamental niche.
