Model answer (4 marks)

1. In complete combustion, the hydrocarbon reacts with a plentiful supply of oxygen to give carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O). In incomplete combustion, limited oxygen causes the fuel to give carbon monoxide (CO) and/or elemental carbon (soot) along with water.
2. Complete combustion releases more energy because the fuel is fully oxidised; incomplete combustion releases less energy because the oxidation is incomplete.
Both processes require oxygen, but the amount determines whether CO₂ or CO/soot is formed and how much energy is released.

Examiner tips

  • Use the word ‘difference’ and list two distinct points; include the products and the role of oxygen; mention energy release for the second point.
  • Show the link between oxygen availability and product formation; keep sentences short and to the point.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up CO₂ and CO as products; forgetting to mention water; not linking oxygen supply to the difference; over‑expanding the answer with irrelevant details.

  2. Complete combustion occurs when there is a plentiful/excess supply of oxygen; incomplete combustion occurs when oxygen supply is limited/insufficient
  3. Both complete and incomplete combustion produce water / H₂O
  4. Complete combustion releases more energy than incomplete combustion (because the fuel is fully oxidised)
