Describe the role of testosterone in the male reproductive system and explain how it differs from the role of oestrogen in the female reproductive system.

Model answer (4 marks)

Testosterone is produced by the Leydig cells of the testes and
1. stimulates the production of sperm in the seminiferous tubules.
2. is responsible for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics such as facial hair, a deeper voice and increased muscle mass.

Oestrogen, produced mainly by the ovaries, has
1. a key role in the growth and repair of the uterine lining (the endometrium), a function that testosterone does not perform.
2. drives the development of female secondary sexual characteristics such as breasts and wider hips, whereas testosterone is the hormone that produces the male traits.

Thus testosterone acts mainly on sperm production and male secondary traits, while oestrogen acts on the uterus and female secondary traits.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact terms ‘Leydig cells’, ‘seminiferous tubules’, ‘endometrium’, and ‘secondary sexual characteristics’.
  • Show the contrast clearly: testosterone → sperm & male traits; oestrogen → uterine lining & female traits.
  • Include the organ names (testes, ovaries, uterus) to demonstrate understanding.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing oestrogen with progesterone or failing to mention the uterine lining.
  • Using vague phrases like ‘makes men look different’ instead of ‘secondary sexual characteristics’.
  • Omitting the source of testosterone (Leydig cells) or the source of oestrogen (ovaries).

  1. Testosterone stimulates the production of sperm (in the testes)
  2. Testosterone is responsible for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics (e.g. facial hair / voice breaking / increased muscle mass)
  3. Oestrogen causes the growth and repair of the uterus lining (whereas testosterone does not act on the uterus / has no equivalent role)
  4. Oestrogen is responsible for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics (whereas testosterone is responsible for male secondary sexual characteristics)
