Model answer (5 marks)

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane.
It occurs from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration, i.e. down a concentration gradient.
Osmosis is a passive process and does not require energy.
Active transport is the movement of substances across a membrane against a concentration gradient, i.e. from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration.
Active transport requires energy, usually from respiration (ATP), whereas osmosis does not.

Examiner tips

  • Use the word ‘passive’ for osmosis and ‘active’ for active transport.
  • Show the direction of movement (high to low for osmosis, low to high for active transport).
  • Mention that active transport needs ATP from respiration.
  • Keep the answer concise and use the exact terminology from the mark scheme.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the direction of movement for osmosis (writing high to high).
  • Forgetting to state that active transport requires ATP.
  • Using vague terms like ‘energy’ without specifying ATP or respiration.
