Recycling metals:
1. Reduces the need to extract raw materials, so quarrying and mining are lessened.
2. Conserves finite resources – ores are used more efficiently and last longer.
3. Requires far less energy than mining and smelting new metal.
4. Lowers the amount of waste sent to landfill, decreasing overall waste generation.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact phrases from the mark scheme – e.g. ‘reduces the need to extract raw materials’ and ‘conserves finite resources’.
  • Show each point as a separate bullet or numbered line to match the 4‑mark structure.
  • Keep the wording concise; avoid unnecessary explanation.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up ‘recycling reduces waste’ with ‘recycling reduces the amount of waste produced’ – use the exact wording.
  • Adding extra points that are not in the mark scheme, such as ‘reduces CO₂ emissions’, which may not be awarded full marks.
