Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons. Explain why crude oil is separated into fractions by fractional distillation, and describe how the process works.

Crude oil is found trapped in rock beneath the Earth's surface. It is a complex mixture and must be processed before it can be used as fuels and raw materials.
Model answer (4 marks)
Crude oil contains many hydrocarbons with a wide range of boiling points, so the mixture cannot be used directly as a fuel or raw material.
To separate it, the crude is heated in a furnace until it vaporises.
The vapour is fed into a fractionating column that has a temperature gradient – hot at the bottom and cool at the top.
As the vapour rises, components with higher boiling points condense first near the bottom, while lower‑boiling components remain gaseous and rise further up, condensing at higher levels. Each condensed liquid is collected as a separate fraction.
This process yields distinct fractions such as naphtha, kerosene, diesel and residual oil, each with a useful boiling‑point range.

- State the reason for separation – different boiling points. Explain heating and vapourisation. Describe the temperature gradient in the column. Mention condensation at different levels and collection of fractions.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the direction of vapour flow or the temperature gradient. Failing to mention that fractions are collected as liquids. Using vague terms like "separate by boiling" without describing the column process.
Mark scheme (4 marks)
- Different hydrocarbons in crude oil have different boiling points (so they cannot be used directly as the mixture)
- The crude oil is heated and vaporised / turned into a gas
- The vapour rises up a fractionating column where there is a temperature gradient (hotter at the bottom, cooler at the top)
- Hydrocarbons condense / turn back into liquids at different levels and are collected as separate fractions
