Plants absorb atmospheric CO₂ during photosynthesis, converting it into glucose and other carbohydrates.
The animal consumes the plant (or another animal that has eaten the plant).
In the animal’s digestive system, the carbohydrates are broken down, releasing carbon atoms.
These carbon atoms are then incorporated into the animal’s own tissues and body materials.

Examiner tips
- Use the word ‘absorb’ for plants and ‘consume’ for animals. Show the flow: CO₂ → plant carbohydrates → animal tissues. Mention digestion as the step where carbon is released.
