Antibodies are an important part of the specific defence system. Explain how antibodies are produced and how they protect the body after a pathogen enters the bloodstream for the first time, and why the response is faster if the same pathogen enters the body a second time.

Model answer (5 marks)
White blood cells, mainly lymphocytes, recognise antigens on the surface of a pathogen that has entered the bloodstream. The lymphocytes then produce and release antibodies that are complementary to that antigen. The antibodies bind to the pathogen, neutralising it or causing agglutination so that it can be removed by other immune cells. After the initial infection, some of the lymphocytes become memory cells and remain in the body. When the same pathogen enters again, the memory cells recognise it immediately, divide rapidly and produce large amounts of antibody in a short time, so the pathogen is destroyed before symptoms appear.
Examiner tips
- Use the term ‘lymphocytes’ and ‘antibodies’ explicitly; link antibody action to neutralisation or agglutination.
- Mention memory cells and rapid secondary response to justify the faster reaction on re‑exposure.
- Keep the answer concise – 5 marks allow a short paragraph, not an essay.

- Confusing antibodies with white blood cells; they are different components.
- Forgetting to mention memory cells or the speed of the secondary response.
- Using vague terms like ‘immune system’ without specifying antibodies or lymphocytes.
Mark scheme (5 marks)
- White blood cells / lymphocytes detect antigens on the surface of the pathogen
- Lymphocytes produce/release complementary antibodies specific to that antigen
- Antibodies bind to antigens on the pathogen to neutralise it / clump pathogens together (agglutination)
- After infection, memory cells remain in the body
- On second exposure to the same pathogen, memory cells rapidly divide and produce antibodies more quickly, so the pathogen is destroyed before symptoms develop
