Model answer (5 marks)

Bromine water is a dilute solution of Br₂ in water, which is orange‑brown.
1. Add a few drops of bromine water to a sample of the hydrocarbon.
2. If the solution remains orange‑brown, the hydrocarbon is an alkane.
3. If the solution becomes colourless, the hydrocarbon is an alkene.

The colour change (or lack of it) is due to the chemical nature of the hydrocarbons:
- Alkanes are saturated, containing only single C–C bonds. They do not react with bromine water, so the Br₂ remains in solution and the orange colour is unchanged.
- Alkenes are unsaturated, containing a C=C double bond. The double bond acts as a nucleophile and undergoes addition with Br₂, forming a dibromide. The Br₂ is consumed, so the solution turns colourless.

Thus, bromine water can be used to distinguish alkanes from alkenes by observing whether the orange colour disappears.

  • Show the colour change explicitly – ‘remains orange‑brown’ and ‘turns colourless’ – as the mark scheme expects.
  • Mention the saturated/unsaturated nature and the addition reaction to justify the result.

Common mistakes

  • Failing to state that the colour change is due to the addition of Br₂ to the C=C bond.
  • Confusing the colour of bromine water with the colour of the hydrocarbon itself.
  • Not distinguishing between the two families in the explanation.

  1. Bromine water remains orange/brown (unchanged) with the alkane
  2. Bromine water is decolourised / turns colourless with the alkene
  3. Alkanes are saturated / contain only single C–C bonds, so they cannot react with bromine water
  4. Alkenes are unsaturated / contain a carbon–carbon double bond
  5. The alkene reacts with bromine water by addition across the double bond, breaking it and removing the bromine from solution
