The global chemical industry produces thousands of different substances, from basic raw materials used in large quantities to highly specialised substances made in small amounts for specific uses.

Model answer (5 marks)

Fine chemicals are produced in small quantities, so the production runs are short and the equipment is not used to its full capacity. The manufacturing process is also more complex, involving many more steps and specialised reactions. Before production can start, a great deal of research and development is required to optimise the synthesis and to ensure the product can be made reliably. The finished product must be of very high purity, which means additional purification stages and stringent quality control. Because of the small scale, bulk‑chemical economies of scale cannot be realised, so the cost per unit is higher.

  • Mention small batch size first, then complexity, R&D, purity, and lack of economies of scale
  • Use the exact terms from the mark scheme – ‘small quantities’, ‘more steps’, ‘research and development’, ‘high degree of purity’, ‘economies of scale’
  • Keep the answer concise – 5 points, no extra words
