Copper(II) oxide is a base. Dilute sulfuric acid has the formula H₂SO₄. The blue solution formed contains copper(II) sulfate.

Examiner tips
- Use the term "neutralisation reaction" first. Show the acid–base interaction. Mention copper(II) oxide as the base. State the salt name correctly.
Common mistakes
- Calling the reaction a redox or decomposition reaction. Forgetting to identify copper(II) oxide as the base. Writing the wrong salt, e.g. copper(II) chloride.
