A student connects two identical lamps in parallel with a battery. Explain how the current and voltage in the parallel circuit compare to those in a series circuit containing the same two lamps and the same battery.

Model answer (4 marks)
In a parallel circuit each lamp is connected directly to the battery, so the voltage across each lamp equals the battery voltage. In a series circuit the two lamps are in line, so the battery voltage is divided between them.
The battery supplies a larger total current in the parallel arrangement because the two paths provide a lower overall resistance. In the series circuit the same current flows through both lamps.

Examiner tips
- Use the word ‘voltage’ and ‘current’ correctly; state that voltage is equal in parallel, split in series. Mention that total current is greater in parallel. Show that current splits in parallel but is common in series.
Common mistakes
- Saying the voltage is the same in both circuits; it is only equal to the battery voltage in parallel.\nConfusing the direction of current flow or not recognising that the total current is greater in parallel.
Mark scheme (4 marks)
- The voltage across each lamp in the parallel circuit is the same as the battery voltage / equal to the supply voltage
- In the series circuit the voltage is shared / split between the two lamps
- The total current from the battery is greater in the parallel circuit than in the series circuit
