Model answer (4 marks)
The becquerel (Bq) is the SI unit of radioactive activity. One becquerel equals one nuclear decay per second. Activity is therefore the rate at which unstable nuclei decay, i.e. the number of decays per unit time. Sample B has a higher activity than Sample A – it undergoes about 52 000 decays per second compared with 5 200 decays per second – so its unstable nuclei are decaying roughly ten times faster.
