Chlorine-35 has a mass number of 35 and an atomic number of 17.
Model answer (4 marks)
A neutral atom of chlorine-35 has 17 protons, 17 electrons and 18 neutrons. To become a negative ion it gains one or more electrons. The extra electrons increase the number of electrons so that there are more electrons than protons, giving the ion a net negative charge. The number of protons (and therefore the atomic number) remains 17, and the number of neutrons is unchanged, so the mass number stays 35.
Examiner tips
- Use the word "gains" to show electron addition; mention the charge change; state that atomic number and mass number are unchanged; keep the answer concise and to the point.
Common mistakes
- Saying the atom loses electrons instead of gains; confusing the mass number with the atomic mass; claiming the atomic number changes when it does not.
