Model answer (5 marks)
During the marathon the runner’s muscles are working hard and the demand for oxygen rises. At the end of the race the oxygen supply is insufficient, so the muscles cannot get enough oxygen to meet the demand.
When oxygen is limited the muscles switch to anaerobic respiration in addition to aerobic respiration.
Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid, which accumulates in the muscle cells and causes the aching, heavy feeling and fatigue.
After the race the runner still has an oxygen debt – the amount of oxygen that would have been required if the muscles had been supplied with enough oxygen during the race.
The body continues to breathe rapidly to provide the extra oxygen needed to repay the debt and to oxidise the lactic acid, which restores normal muscle function.

- Use the exact terms ‘oxygen supply’, ‘anaerobic respiration’, ‘lactic acid’, ‘oxygen debt’ and explain the link between them.
- Show the causal chain: insufficient oxygen → anaerobic respiration → lactic acid → muscle ache; oxygen debt → rapid breathing to repay debt and remove lactic acid.
- Keep the answer concise – 5 points, no extra explanation.
- Use UK spelling (e.g. ‘oxygens’ not ‘oxygen’).
Common mistakes
- Confusing aerobic and anaerobic respiration; writing that only anaerobic occurs. Forgetting to mention the oxygen debt or the role of lactic acid in the post‑race breathing. Using vague phrases like ‘muscles tired’ instead of ‘lactic acid accumulation’.
Mark scheme (5 marks)
- Towards the end of the race, oxygen supply to muscles is insufficient / muscles cannot get enough oxygen
- Muscles respire anaerobically (as well as aerobically)
- Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid, which causes the muscle ache / fatigue
