In a coral reef food chain, algae are eaten by small fish, which are eaten by large fish, which are eaten by sharks.
Model answer (5 marks)
Algae are the primary producers in the reef, using light energy to make biomass. When small fish eat the algae, only a fraction of that energy is transferred to the fish; the rest is lost as heat during respiration, movement and maintaining body temperature, and as waste products such as faeces and urine. The same loss occurs when large fish eat the small fish, and again when sharks eat the large fish. Because energy is lost at each trophic level, the amount of energy available to support organisms decreases stepwise. Consequently, the biomass that can be supported at the top trophic level (sharks) is far less than that at the bottom (algae), so the shark population can never be as large as the algae population.
Examiner tips
- Use the word "primary producers" for algae; mention energy loss as heat and waste; explain stepwise decrease in available energy; link to biomass limits at each level.
- Show the chain of energy transfer and loss clearly; keep answer concise and directly tied to the mark scheme points.

- Algae photosynthesise / use light energy to produce biomass, making them the producers / first trophic level
- Energy is lost at each trophic level
- Energy is lost through heat released during respiration / movement / maintaining body temperature
- Energy is also lost in waste products / undigested material / faeces / urine
- Because less energy is available at each successive trophic level, less biomass can be supported, so the shark population (top predator) must be smaller than the algae population
