# Titanium is a transition metal with atomic number 22 and mass number 48. A different isotope of titanium has mass number 46. Explain why both of these titanium atoms have the same chemical properties, and state the number of neutrons in each isotope.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Both isotopes have the same number of protons (22) / same atomic number
2. Chemical properties are determined by the number of electrons, and both isotopes have the same number of electrons (22)
3. Titanium-48 has 26 neutrons (48 − 22 = 26)
4. Titanium-46 has 24 neutrons (46 − 22 = 24)
