# Malaria is a communicable disease caused by a protist spread by mosquitoes. Explain how malaria is transmitted from one person to another and describe three ways in which the spread of malaria can be limited.

## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. Malaria is transmitted through the bite of a female mosquito (vector)
2. The mosquito is a vector — it carries the disease without being infected itself
3. Minimise areas where mosquitoes can breed, such as removing standing water
4. Use mosquito repellents or mosquito nets to prevent bites
5. Take anti-malarial drugs before travelling to countries where malaria is common
