# Explain why the voltage produced by a chemical cell depends on the type of chemicals used in the cell. In your answer, refer to what happens when the reactants in a non-rechargeable cell are used up.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Cells contain chemicals which react to produce electricity / the chemical reaction produces a potential difference
2. Different chemicals release different amounts of energy / produce different potential differences
3. In a non-rechargeable cell the chemical reactions cannot be reversed
4. The cell stops producing a potential difference / voltage when one of the reactants has been used up
