# Explain why pollination alone does not result in the production of a new plant.

> Pollination is an important stage in the sexual reproduction of flowering plants. However, pollination is not the final step required before a new plant can develop.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Pollination is only the transfer of pollen grains from the male part to the female part of a plant
2. Fertilisation must also occur / pollen must travel to the ovule for fertilisation
3. Fertilisation is the fusion of the nucleus of the male and female gametes
4. Fertilisation produces a zygote / fertilised egg which develops into an embryo / new plant
