# Explain why nanoparticles of a substance can have different properties compared to a bulk sample of the same substance, and suggest one reason why the use of nanoparticles in consumer products may cause concern.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Nanoparticles have a much larger surface area to volume ratio than bulk materials
2. Because of this greater surface area to volume ratio, nanoparticles can exhibit different/new properties compared to the bulk material
3. Nanoparticles have diameters between 1 nm and 100 nm, meaning they are so small they may pass through cell membranes / into the body
4. The long-term health or environmental effects of nanoparticles are not yet fully known / tested, so their safety is uncertain
