# Explain why metals are good conductors of heat.

> Cambridge International IGCSE Chemistry (0620) — 2.7 Metallic bonding · Explain · 4 marks

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Metals contain delocalised electrons (free/mobile electrons)
2. When one end of the metal is heated, these delocalised electrons gain (kinetic) energy
3. The energised delocalised electrons move/travel through the metal (transferring energy)
4. Energy is transferred rapidly throughout the metal because electrons can move freely in all directions
