# Explain why maintaining a stable blood glucose concentration is important for cells in the body.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. If blood glucose concentration is too high, the water potential of the blood decreases / becomes very low
2. Water moves out of cells into the blood by osmosis, causing cells to shrink / die
3. If blood glucose concentration is too low, the water potential of the blood increases / is higher than that of cells
4. Water moves into cells by osmosis, causing them to burst / lyse; OR stable blood glucose provides a reliable / constant energy source for cells
