# Explain why incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels is harmful to human health and the environment.

> Hydrocarbon fuels are burned in vehicles and industrial processes. When there is insufficient oxygen, incomplete combustion occurs, releasing pollutants into the atmosphere.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide
2. Carbon monoxide is toxic / harmful to humans
3. Incomplete combustion produces carbon particulates (soot)
4. Carbon particulates cause global dimming / health problems such as respiratory issues
