# Explain why decomposers are important in an ecosystem.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Decomposers break down dead organisms / organic material
2. Decomposers release nutrients / minerals into the soil
3. Nutrients / minerals can then be absorbed / taken up by plants
4. This allows nutrients to be recycled / cycling of nutrients to continue in the ecosystem
