## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. Mitosis produces new cells for growth (increase in cell number / body size)
2. Mitosis produces new cells to replace damaged or worn-out cells (repair / replacement)
3. The daughter cells produced are genetically identical to the parent cell
4. Each daughter cell contains the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
5. This ensures the new cells can carry out the same functions / have the correct genetic instructions to function properly in the organism
