# Explain why ATP is synthesised during respiration and outline what happens to ATP once it has been synthesised.

## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. ATP is synthesised to provide / store energy (for the cell)
2. Respiration transfers energy (from glucose / food) to ATP
3. ATP is broken down / hydrolysed (releasing energy)
4. ATP is broken down into ADP and (inorganic) phosphate
5. The energy released from ATP is used to power cellular processes / named cellular process (e.g. muscle contraction, active transport, protein synthesis)
