# Explain why addition polymers, such as poly(ethene), cannot be broken down by chemical reactions in the environment, and suggest one problem this causes.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Addition polymers have very strong covalent bonds (within the polymer chain) / are chemically inert / unreactive
2. Microorganisms / bacteria cannot break down / digest the polymer chains
3. This means addition polymers are non-biodegradable / persist in the environment for a very long time
4. One named problem: e.g. plastic waste accumulates in landfill / oceans / harms wildlife / pollutes ecosystems (any one valid environmental problem)
