# Explain why a reflex action, such as blinking when an object moves towards the eye, occurs more rapidly than a voluntary action.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. In a reflex action the nerve impulse does not travel to the brain (for processing).
2. In a reflex action the impulse passes through fewer neurones / a shorter pathway (via the relay neurone in the CNS).
3. A voluntary action requires the impulse to travel to the brain, where it is processed / a decision is made.
4. Reflex actions are involuntary / do not involve conscious thought, so the response to the stimulus is immediate / protective.
