# Explain why a cell must copy its chromosomes before mitosis can occur.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Chromosomes contain the genetic material / genes / DNA of the cell
2. Mitosis produces two daughter cells that must each receive a full set of chromosomes
3. If chromosomes were not copied first, each daughter cell would only receive half the number of chromosomes
4. The daughter cells are genetically identical to the parent cell / copying ensures the correct genetic information is passed on
