# Explain the importance of inorganic ions in the process of photosynthesis and in the structure of cell membranes in a plant cell.

## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. Magnesium ions are needed to make chlorophyll
2. Without chlorophyll, light energy cannot be absorbed / photosynthesis cannot occur
3. Phosphate ions are needed to make phospholipids
4. Phospholipids form the bilayer / are the main structural component of cell membranes
5. Phosphate ions are also needed to make ATP, which provides energy for reactions in the cell
