# Explain how the structure of the trachea and bronchi allows them to carry out their functions in the respiratory system.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. The trachea/bronchi are held open by rings of cartilage
2. This allows air to flow freely / continuously to the lungs
3. The lining of the trachea/bronchi contains cilia and goblet cells / produces mucus
4. Cilia beat to move mucus (and trapped particles/pathogens) up towards the throat/mouth, away from the lungs
